Unit 5- Glossary

Hey Guys!

I have some words / phrases and its meanings with examples.

To convict [s/o] of [a crime] 
To declare that s/o is guilty of a cry me. "The man is convicted to robbery."

To murder 
To kill a person on purpose. "It seems she was murdered with a knife."

A murderer
A person who has murdered. "He was sentenced to life in prison as a murderer."

To break into [a place]
To enter by force, usually in order to still something. "The man broke into a liquor store and stole some money."

To get arrested 
To be taken by the police as a suspect of a crime. "She was arrested last night for breaking into the store."

To be against the law 
Illegal, not allowed by the law. "It is against the law to buy cigarettes before you are 18."

Restrict
To limit the movements or actions. " Guns are restricted in Canada. You need a special licence to buy a gun."

To ban
To forbid; to refuse to allow something officially. " Chemical weapons are banned I many countries."

Violent
Using force to hurt or attack. "Kids should not be allowed to watch violent until they are 18."

To divorce 
An official or legal process to and a marriage. "Jim and Sally are divorcing."

To pass [a law]
To officially approve a law. "The government passed new drugs laws."

To encourage
To give support or confidence to someone. "The teacher encourage her students to ask questions."

To kidnap
To take a person away illegally by force. "The wife of a rich businessman was kidnapped from her home last night."

Fine
An amount of money that has to be paid as a punishment for a crime. "The fine for speeding is $300." "He was fined $200 for speeding."

To shoplift 
To take goods illegally from a store without paying for them. "The store installed security cameras to stop shoplifting."
